THE “RUICARD (RUICABO)”
The Ruicabo, the origin of whose name is not certain, is an ancient little square off the rue de la Saulnerie, overlooking the river Rodoir end of the old port. The large 15th or 16th century house, with a gable on two streets, has since lost its chimney which was the tallest in the old town. In fact, the layout of the gables made it necessary to construct the chimneys on the sides of the houses, rather than the gable end, in order to ensure a satisfactory draw for the fireplace, which in many cases was shared between houses. The corbels projecting through the outside wall to support the chimney are the only remains of this construction and luckily one can see examples of this in many of the houses. All the actual squares in La Roche-Bernard are the result of demolition of houses, for example the neighbouring Place du Bouffay; with perhaps the exception of the Ruicabo.
Prior to the building of the new road from Redon to Guérande, there were many small houses, workshops and single room dwellings packed together down towards the rock. TheTown Plan of 1856 confirms the demolition of thirty of these habitations. |
