Même si les lavandières y plongeaient et débarbouillaient leurs
marmots qui avaient joué tout le jeudi sous les marronniers des Garennes,
elles peinaient surtout à y rincer les draps, rude tâche exclusivement
féminine parfois ponctuée de cris et de discussions, animées tournant
au crêpage de chignon ou chants de travail.

Un autre lavoir à la Grée Blanche au bord du ruisseau était parfois inondé ;
c’est peut-être pour cette raison qu’un 3^ème fut creusé au fond de la
place du Dôme, enfoui sous du remblai comme l’antique fontaine à
proximité qui a été enterrée avec son ruisseau derrière le nouveau cinéma.

What is a “lavoir”?  It looks like a swimming pool!

In fact it is here that the “lavandieres”, the washer women, would wash the clothes and sheets of their customers in La Roche-Bernard, wheeling the linen in wooden wheelbarrows.  This work was exclusively feminine and, whilst usually a social occasion with laughter and songs, would sometimes erupt into fierce arguments and fights.

Another lavoir at La Grée Blanche (behind the old cinema) was often flooded so for this reason a third lavoir was constructed in Place du Dôme.  This, along with an old fountain, is now under tarmac, behind the new cinema.
